Technical documentation, specifications, and extensive price lists often need to present large volumes of data in a controlled layout. If such documents are maintained entirely by hand in Adobe InDesign, the effort grows with every product variation. Quality control and consistency also become increasingly difficult. Vehicle price lists are one example. Models, engines, equipment packages, technical specifications, and country-specific prices create a large number of combinations. The data already exists in databases, while the publication is required as a designed PDF or an editable InDesign file. ## Requirements for an Automated Solution An appropriate architecture should: - take structured data directly from a database, - comply with mandatory layout and brand rules, - generate large documents reproducibly, - provide both PDF and InDesign files, - separate changes to data from changes to design, - and support final editorial refinement. ## Adobe InDesign Server as the Publishing Engine Adobe InDesign Server exposes InDesign capabilities through automated server processes. Templates define the layouts, while scripts insert the required data and assemble the document. A graphic designer creates the InDesign template with placeholders and mandatory layout rules. 2. JavaScript files control InDesign and are first tested locally. 3. Once tested, the template and scripts are deployed to InDesign Server. 4. A web application built with Lucee manages the data and accepts publication requests. 5. Users select the content and output format. 6. InDesign is responsible for design, typography, and page composition. This separation reduces duplicate maintenance and allows data to be updated independently of the layout. Responsibilities remain clear as well: subject-matter users maintain content, designers develop the template, and the server generates reproducible documents. Template changes can be applied to the next edition without setting the entire data set manually again. ## Review and Refinement Automatically generated PDFs can first be provided for subject-matter review. If corrections are required, the source data or template is updated and the document is generated again.
