WHAT IS A DISCRETE SERVER?

Discrete servers have been designed for simple deployments where there is no need to deliver digital media across a distributed network of servers.

Discrete servers offer features that are well suited for single-server deployments. You will, however, have the ability to deploy as many of these servers as you like. You will not be able to distribute content from one server to another.

We strongly recommend that you consider deploying discrete servers in pairs where the second server is acting as a hot back-up. In this way, you build in redundancy to ensure that broadcasts don’t fail in the event of equipment failure. You may also want to deploy the second server to load-balance incoming connections.

Discrete servers are typically not available to service providers. If you provide network services to consumers or businesses and/or provide content aggregation and media application services to businesses, you will need to purchase a connected server. Companies who use the Real software to provide media services to consumers under their own brands are welcome and encouraged to license discrete servers.

FOUR DISCRETE SERVERS AVAILABLE

There are four discrete servers available in two different formats. Helix Servers allow you to deliver RealAudio 10 and RealVideo 10 to RealPlayers.

Helix Universal Servers allow you deliver more than 50 data types including RealAudio 10 and RealVideo 10, Legacy versions of RealAudio and RealVideo, Windows Media, QuickTime and MPEG4 to a wide variety of players.

Helix Server STARTER
25-stream entry-level server that delivers RealAudio 10 and RealVideo 10 only. Helix Server Starter offers solid delivery capabilities to those just getting started with streaming. Please note, this serve cannot be upgraded to support additional capacity in future. To do this, an additional server will need to be purchased.

Helix UNIVERSAL Server STARTER
100-stream server that delivers more than 55 data types including RealAudio, RealVideo, Windows Media and QuickTime. Helix Universal Server Starter is a great solution for medium-sized audiences and can be upgraded to an unlimited capacity server in the future.

Helix Server UNLIMITED
Unlimited capacity* server that delivers RealAudio 10 and RealVideo 10 only.Helix Server Unlimited is designed for organisations who deliver RealAudio and RealVideo to large audiences or who are concerned about exceeding capacity constraints.

Helix UNIVERSAL Server UNLIMITED
Unlimited capacity* server that delivers more than 50 data types including RealAudio, RealVideo, Windows Media and QuickTime. Helix Universal Server Unlimited is designed for organisations who deliver all the leading formats to large audiences or who are concerned about exceeding capacity contraints.

*Unlimited Capacity server means that the software license does not have a specific megabit or stream capacity limit in the license key. Please note: The actual capacity you see will depend on the mix and nature of your streaming traffic as well as the host computer hardware configuration you select. The discrete line of Helix Servers and Helix Universal Servers is licensed for use on most mainstream hardware configurations today with up to two central processing units (CPUs) and one standard 100Mbps network interface card (NIC) for media traffic.
